We highly recommend this new book on back pain: Crooked, Outwitting the Back Pain Industry and Getting on the Road to Recovery

A major new book on back pain and the back pain industry had been published: Crooked, by investigative journalist Cathryn Jacobson Ramin. The book follows her journey in seeking help for her own back pain and takes us through a critical review of the recent history of treatments including surgery, disc replacements, steroidal injections, and medications. She evaluates the value of well-targeted exercise programs, especially for people with non-specific chronic low back pain.

In the chapter ‘The Posture Mavens’, Ramin describes her experiences with a range of approaches, including a very positive response and endorsement for the Feldenkrais Method. She describes her experiences of attending one of our back care workshops at the Feldenkrais Center and a Functional Integration lesson with Deborah Bowes.

Cathryn has recently been interviewed on Bay Area radio stations: on Forum on KQED and Your Call on KALW – and you should be able to find podcasts those interviews on their websites for a while

You can visit Cathryn Ramin’s website for more details, and see her page on Feldenkrais Method, which includes Deborah Bowes talk on Feldenkrais and chronic low back pain for a recent Stanford Pain Day.

The Feldenkrais Center for Movement & Awareness will be offering the back care program Cathryn describes this Fall. Please contact us if you are interested and we will mail you information when we have finalized the dates.
